A child’s job is play, however there are millions of children that do not have the option of toys that are designed with their needs and abilities in mind.

Development by Design is changing that. DbD uses Universal Design to create toys and games that all children can engage in, learn from and most importantly have fun!!

One out of every five kids in the US is currently diagnosed with a disability, and one out of every 100 kids has Autism. DbD toys are not age specific, but skill specific, making them perfect for all kids! Our unique icon system makes choosing the perfect toy simple.

DbD toys aid in the development of cognitive, motor, emotional and social skills by targeting forty skills in ten distinct areas of development. DbD toys allow kids, with or without special needs, the opportunity to develop new skills and have fun just being kids!

"Ingenious!"

-Abilitaitons (about DbD Snap Bags)

"DbD stands out precisely because of Kessin's product-design approach. Instead of taking an existing toy and tweaking, Kessin and her team, which includes a pediatric occupational therapist, want to dream fresh ideas into life to enrich the lives of kids with special needs."

-Stanford Magazine, November/ December 2007

I am a pediatric school-based OT and I just wanted to tell you that I purchased the Snap Bags very recently and I love them!!! I have the kids catching them, throwing them, snapping them together to make a 2 pound ball and throwing/catching them. I snap 2 together and wrap them around students wrists and have them do jumping jacks, body copy activities, and they love to wear them to play balloon volleyball. They also love to wear them to write on the chalkboard. They are soft, durable, and fun to play with!

-Tonya, OT

"I was so excited to see some DbD toys at my local favourite toy store! I bought the snap bags for my four year old who has Angelman Syndrome. They have been a playful way to give her the kind of weighted feedback that she craves and her little sister has loved practicing snapping the bags together. She has been wearing them like a necklace and I've been draping them over her as she falls asleep and it really helps her calm down for sleep. I think we'll get years of value out of this toy. "

Snap Bags: "Great Toy! This is a great toy with many uses. My 4 1/2 year old son has a sensory processing disorder and we use these to practice throwing, fine motor for snapping, and it looks cool enough to use at school during circle time over his shoulders to help keep him calm. "

Bumpity Blocks: "Great quality. Bought them for my 1 year old, however my 3 year old loves them too."

"Thank you so much for these ideas. I have to babysit my nephew and he has autism. You just gave me such great ideas so everyone can play. Thank you!"

"Thank you so much for this article!! I i have a special needs child and one who is delayed. They both always want to join in on tag games and end up being left out because they don't understand what to do! I have tried to show them and the others different ways to play...and never get anywhere! I love the SuperHero tag game you talk about! I will be doing this one the very next time its a tag game. And with this it sounds like I will also be able to get them going slow and my youngest can even play!! Thank you so much!!"
